I find this is the same in a marriage - one person tends to be the planner. Until things go wrong. In our case, it was depression related to an MS. It's important for the non-planners to be aware that the planners occasionally need someone else to plan events for their lives. But you are right - playing social chicken, especially with your partner, is a recipe for disaster. Better to have open communication with friends and family and be able to explain why planning is so hard right now.
